Housing Providers

Allergens and irritants (often called triggers) found in the home can cause dangerous asthma emergencies.  Thus, reducing or eliminating asthma triggers can play an important role in managing asthma and preventing asthma emergencies.

Common allergens (things that someone is allergic to) found in the home include:
  • mold
  • dust mites
  • animals with fur or feathers
  • cockroaches and rodents

Common irritants (things that irritate the airways) found in the home include:
  • Secondhand smoke
  • Strong odors and smells

There are a variety of things that landlords/housing providers can do to promote asthma-friendly home environments:
  • Prohibit smoking – establish smoke-free policies
  • Keep units in good condition and properly ventilated to prevent water leaks, moisture build up and pests
  • Remediate mold issues immediately
  • Remediate pests issues immediately – use integrated pest management
